A casting can look perfect at your gate and still fail in the field.
Castwise has been making iron castings since 1990, and over the years one lesson has shaped how we work: a strong casting is proven by testing, not by looks alone. Two parts can look identical on the outside, yet only lab checks show which one will perform for years in the field. That's why the best way to choose a ductile iron castings supplier in India is to look at their quality process, not just their price per kilo. With the right checks in place, you get parts you can install with full confidence.
In this blog, we explain the three quality areas every good foundry controls: shrinkage porosity, nodularity and galvanizing. You'll also see how Castwise tests for each one, so every part we ship meets your drawing and your grade.
Why Ductile Iron Defects Stay Hidden
Here's the frustrating bit for buyers. A casting with a melt problem wears the same grey skin as a perfect one, and you could run a vernier over it all afternoon without finding the void sitting 20 mm under the surface, which is why our quality team spends more time in the lab than at the inspection table.
Defect 1: Shrinkage Porosity
Thick sections are always the last bit of a casting to go solid, and iron shrinks as it sets. Starve that spot of liquid metal and a nest of tiny holes forms, leaving less real iron in there than your design engineer counted on. It can handle everyday loads for weeks, then crack on the first real overload.
What a good foundry does about it: Feeders and risers get designed around each individual part rather than lifted from an old pattern. We then saw the first few castings off new tooling in half (sectioning, in shop language) and look at the cut face with our own eyes. Heavy parts get cut up again at intervals too, because sand, temperature and metal all wander a little over a season.
Defect 2: Poor Nodularity
Nodularity problems catch out plenty of experienced buyers, since a bad part can still post a decent tensile figure. If the graphite grows as flakes rather than nodules, strength may look okay on paper while elongation quietly falls through the floor. With high strength ductile iron castings doing load-bearing work, losing that stretch is the one thing you really can't live with.
What a good foundry does about it: Nodularity depends on the magnesium treatment given to the molten iron. A separate test bar gets poured from each heat, and our lab looks at it under the microscope and pulls it to failure on the tensile machine. You end up with real strength and elongation figures from the same metal your parts were poured from.
Defect 3: Galvanizing That Won't Bond
Fittings on Indian poles see blazing June sun followed by weeks of monsoon, so most ductile iron pole line hardware is hot-dip galvanized. Leave a little burnt sand, scale or silicon segregation on the casting and the zinc only grips in patches. Before long it lifts off in flakes and the rust moves in.
What a good foundry does about it: Parts go through shot blasting until the whole surface is uniformly clean before they're dipped. We also hold the chemistry in a galvanizing-friendly band, since iron that's too rich in silicon tends to grow a thick, brittle zinc coat that chips away.
The Tests That Should Back Every Shipment
At Castwise our own metallurgical lab handles spectrometer, tensile, hardness and CMM work, so test results don't sit in somebody else's queue.

How to Choose a Ductile Iron Castings Supplier in India
Here's what we'd ask any foundry before handing over a purchase order:
- Will every dispatch come with a test certificate carrying the heat or batch number?
- How often do you pour test bars? (The answer you want is once per heat.)
- Can I see sectioned first-off samples for my thick-walled parts?
- Are tensile and hardness tests done at your plant, or posted off to an outside lab?
- For galvanized parts, how do you prep the surface and keep silicon in check?
- Can I see your ISO 9001:2015 or CQI-27 certificate?
If you're weighing up price too, our companion piece on what drives the cost of ductile iron pole line fittings covers that side.
FAQs
What is the most common defect in ductile iron castings? Shrinkage porosity is the one we come across most, mainly in parts with thick sections. Well-planned risers and sectioning of first-off castings are how it gets caught early.
Why does galvanizing peel off ductile iron fittings? In most cases we've looked at, it traces back to a poorly blasted surface or silicon running high in the melt, and fixing those two usually ends the complaints.
What should a test certificate for ductile iron castings include? At the very least you should see the chemistry, tensile strength, elongation, and hardness, along with a heat or batch number that links those results to the parts in your consignment. If the certificate has no heat number on it, ask why, because without one you can't tell which melt your parts came from.
How can I check if a ductile iron casting has good nodularity? You can't tell by looking at the part, so ask your supplier for a microstructure report from the test bar poured with your heat. Read the nodularity figure on that report together with the elongation result from the tensile test, since a healthy elongation number is a good sign the graphite formed properly.
